Applying for a Practising Licence - Information for Applicants

Introduction

All registered electrical workers must hold a practising licence if they carry out prescribed electrical work for reward. (This means that money is paid, or any valuable thing is given to you or to any other person in exchange for the work you have done.)

This is a requirement of section 95 of the Electricity Act 1992.

To be eligible for a practising licence, your refresher courses for safe working practices, testing to ensure safety, basic first aid and CPR must be current. This requirement is detailed in regulation 26 of the Electricity Regulations 1997.

All practising licences are identified by the holder's registration number.

Practising Licence Fees

(All fees include GST)

The practising licence fee for all classes of registration is $92.00. The total fee payable remains $92.00 if you are registered in more than one class. If you are registered in more than one class you will be issued with a practising licence in each class. The total fee payable remains $92.00.

These fees have been adjusted by the Board pursuant to regulation 109(3) of the Electricity Regulations 1997.

Practising Licences issued part way through the year will normally still incur the full application fee.

If you apply for a licence part way through the licensing year because you have been working in alternative employment, unemployed, overseas etc, the Board will consider pro-rataing the fee.

Courses of Instruction

Safe Working Practices, Testing to ensure safety, Basic first aid and CPR.

You must have completed the training described in the chart below to be eligible for the issue of a practising licence. Please give full details in Section 4 - Training on your application form.

Who may conduct courses?

  • Tutors for safe working practices and testing courses must hold a registration that permits them to do the work which is covered in the course. Qualified Engineers may also instruct.
  • Tutors for basic first aid courses must hold a current St John or Red Cross First Aid Instructors Certificate or an equivalent qualification.
  • Tutors for CPR courses must be trained or qualified in accordance with Section 8 of the "Electrical Code of Practice for CPR Training in the Electrical Industry" issued by the then Ministry of Commerce.

Prior approval is not required from the EWRB for the conducting of courses for the issue of a practising licence. However, you should make sure the person providing the course has the relevant minimum qualification described in the chart below.

Safe working practices that are appropriate to the type of work being undertaken.

This must relate to the class of registration held.

Within the 24 months preceding the date of application. Within the 14 months preceding the date of application.
Testing to ensure safety prior to connecting work for which the applicant is registered and to ensure safety during and after the completion of such work.

Basic first aid. Within the 24 months preceding the date of application. Within the 14 months preceding the date of application.
Cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Within the 24 months preceding the date of application. Within the 7 months preceding the date of application.
