Investigations UpdateThe Electrical Workers Licensing Group commences an investigation when information or a complaint is received about an unauthorised person doing prescribed electrical work, or when an incident has occurred which requires further investigation to ascertain the facts of the matter. The Investigations Officer investigates a complaint lodged against a non-registered person and if there is sufficient evidence to prove the offence in Court, a prosecution may be instituted. As the Boards fundamental approach is one of obtaining compliance with the registration/licensing provisions of the Act, most investigations do not result in a prosecution. Since July 2002, one prosecution has been finalised: An unregistered person was found to have carried out wiring to a private residence in a manner that was negligent and dangerous to life. This person was convicted and fined a total of $800 and ordered to pay court costs totalling $260. Around 100 investigations are currently in progress, including several where prosecutions are likely. Details about these investigations will be provided when they are available.
