1. Editorial

As advised in earlier editions of ELECTRON, the Board is working to achieve the strategic initiatives which are set out in its five year strategic plan.

A number of these have been completed and others will be completed in the near future. Three important initiatives are ongoing, and the first of these is to make all information relevant to the industry available to those registered electrical workers who support the Board's practising licence requirements.

There has been very positive feedback from the industry on the "added value" the Board has provided practising licence holders by supplying documents such as AS/NZS 3000:2000 Wiring Rules, the CD containing nine companion standards and the Electricity Regulation Compilation.

The second important ongoing initiative is the Board's desire to leverage off the synergies and economies of scale offered by the Ministry of Economic Development. In part this initiative has resulted in the Board's processing of practising licence renewals being transferred to the Companies Office National Processing Centre in Auckland. This Centre is well equipped to handle the expected 22.000 practising licence applications over the next ten weeks.

It is also anticipated that the cost of issuing practising licences will reduce as a result of this transfer.

The final important initiative is to enhance the Board's On Licence licensing function that was successfully implemented last year. While the On Line facility will again be available to all registered electrical workers who would like to use this option to renew their practising licence and update their safety training and contact details, the e-business aspect has been enlarged.

This month will see the introduction of practising licence reminders being sent by e-mail to approximately 8,000 registered electrical workers. The introduction of the electronic transaction facility is seen as significant as it will allow electrical workers who prefer to do business electronically to do so in a user friendly environment.

Information on how to licence online is included in the practising licence renewal pack for those workers that do not have e-mail addresses listed in the database.

Finally, on behalf of the Board I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of those people who support the practising licence requirements.

John Sickels
Registrar
