Contents
Under the Electricity Act 1992 registration as an
Electrician is required for a person to carry out prescribed
electrical work in their own right.
An electrician is permitted to carry out any prescribed
electrical work.
Registration Requirements
National Certificate Holders
- Complete the unit standards for a National Certificate
in Electrical Engineering - Electrician (Level 4) and be
awarded the appropriate certificate issued by NZQA; and
- Complete an electricians theory course and pass the NZQA
9183 exam.
Non-National Certificate Holders
- Complete a minimum of 4 years (8000 hours) work as an
electrician, including at least 2000 hours general wiring
installation work; or completion of an equivalent skill
based apprenticeship.
- Complete an electricians theory course and pass the NZQA
9183 exam.
- Complete an electricians regulations course and pass the
NZQA 9184 exam.
- Complete and pass stages 1, 2 and 3 of the electricians
practical assessment (as per schedule 1 to the Electricity
Regulations 1997).
- Complete courses in safe working practices, testing,
basic first aid and CPR (These are normally included
in the stage 3 electricians practical assessment course).

National Certificate
Level 4 holders please send:
- A completed registration/practising licence application
form;
- A copy of your National Certificate;
- A copy of documentation showing results of the
electrical theory and regulations examinations.
- A registration fee, plus a practising licence fee if
appropriate.
Other applicants please send:
- A completed registration/practising licence application
form;
- Details of work experience to satisfy the requirements
mentioned above, confirmed in writing by the relevant
employer(s);
- Results sheets confirming completion and passes in the
coursework for Non-National Certificate holders mentioned
above; and
- A registration and a practical assessment fee, plus a
practising licence fee if appropriate.
Other Information
- The registration fee is $103.00 (GST Incl.), the
practical assessment application fee is $25.00 (GST incl).
The practising licence fee is on a "pro rata"
basis (see fee schedule on the application form). Make
cheques payable to "Electrical Workers Registration
Board".
- A practising license is required where prescribed
electrical work is to be undertaken for payment or reward
to you or any other person.
- The coursework for safe working practices, testing,
basic first aid and CPR is required to have been
undertaken in the previous 24 months.
- Send applications to the Electrical Workers Registration
Board, PO Box 10156, Wellington. Please allow 10 working
days for processing.
