Contents
Under the Electricity Act 1992 Electrical Service
Technician (EST) registration is required for a person to
carry out prescribed electrical work, involving the
maintenance of electrical appliances, in their own right.
EST registrations are normally issued with one of the
following limitations:
- The maintenance of electrical appliances rated up to 230
volts, single phase supplied via plug and flexible cord.
- The maintenance and replacement of electrical appliances
and fittings rated up to 460 volts including their
disconnection from and reconnection to permanent wiring.
Registration Requirements
For registration with the limitation of i above the
requirements are:
- Completion of a minimum of 18 months experience on
prescribed electrical work including 2000 hours (approx.
12 months) servicing the electrical aspects of 230 volt
plug-in appliances; and
- A pass of the EST A practical assessment and written
examination.
For registration with the limitation of ii above the
requirements are:
- Completion of a minimum of 18 months experience on
prescribed electrical work that includes:
- 1000 hours (approx. 6 months) servicing the
electrical aspects of 230 volt plug-in appliances; and
- 1000 hours (approx. 6 months) replacing or servicing
the electrical aspects of appliances over 230 volts
(up to 460 volts rating) and fittings of an electrical
installation;
- A pass of the EST A practical assessment and written
examination; and
- A pass of the EST B practical assessment and written
examination.
A person holding EST registration with a
limitation of i above is exempt from items 1(a) and 2 above.
Applying for Registration
Please send:
- A completed application form;
- A work-history statement from the
employer(s), providing details of the applicants
electrical work experience and the duration of that
experience; and
- An application/registration fee, plus a practising
licence fee if appropriate.
Notes
- New Zealand obtained experience is required to be under
a supervisor of electrical work.
- The application/registration fee is $103.00 (GST incl.).
- The practising license fee is on a "pro rata"
basis (see fee schedule on the application form). Make
cheques payable to the "Electrical Workers
Registration Board".
- An annual practising licence is required where
prescribed electrical work is to be undertaken for payment
or reward to you or any other person.
