Line Mechanic

Contents
Under the Electricity Act 1992 registration as a Line
Mechanic is required for a person to carry out prescribed
electrical work on in their own right.
Registered Line Mechanics are permitted to carry out
prescribed electrical work involving the construction and
maintenance of electric lines.
Registration Requirements
Experience
The required experience is a minimum of 2 years work as a
Line Mechanic, of which 3 months must have been obtained in
New Zealand.
Tuition and Examinations
- Completion of the National Certificate electricity
supply Line mechanic in either Distribution or Transmission
(level 4)
OR
- Completion of a line mechanic theory/regulations course
conducted by an approved training provider and a pass in
the associated exam; and
- Completion and a pass in a line mechanic practical
examination or practical assessment conducted by an
approved training provider; and
- Completion of courses in safe working practices,
testing, basic first aid and CPR (This may be included
as part of the practical examination or practical
assessment).
Persons with qualifications from
New South Wales, Queensland or Victoria see note 4 and
schedule 6 of the Electricity Regulations 1997.
Applying for Registration
Please send:
- A completed application form;
- Details of work experience to satisfy the requirements
mentioned above, confirmed in writing by the relevant
employer(s).
- Results sheets for the tuition and examinations above;
and
- A registration fee plus a practising licence fee, if
appropriate. See notes 1 and 2.
Persons with line worker qualifications from New South
Wales, Queensland or Victoria should send :
- A completed application form;
- Written confirmation of 3 months New Zealand work
experience;
- A copy of the relevant qualification certificate;
- Written confirmation of having completed courses in safe
working practices, testing CPR and basic first aid; and
- A registration fee, plus a practising license fee, if
appropriate. See notes 1 and 2.
Notes
- The registration application fee is $103.00 (GST Incl.).
The practising licence fee is on a "pro rata"
basis (see fee schedule on the application form). Make
cheques payable to "Electrical Workers Registration
Board".
- A practising license is required where prescribed
electrical work is to be undertaken for payment or reward.

Please allow 10 working days for processing.
- Persons with line worker qualifications from New South
Wales, Queensland or Victoria are required to have 3
months New Zealand work experience and are exempt from
items 1 and 2 of the coursework.
