Content
Under the Electricity Act 1992 registration as an
Electrician is required for a person to carry out prescribed
electrical work on electrical installations, in their own
right.
In general, under Regulation 20, electricians may do any
"prescribed electrical work".
Registration Requirements
Experience
- Complete a minimum of 4 years (8000 hours) work as an
electrician, including at least 2000 hours general wiring
installation work, the work experience to be carried out
under the supervision of a suitably qualified person.
Actual details are provided in Schedule 1 of the
Electricity Regulations 1997.
- Persons with electricians work
experience, obtained while working as an electrical
service technician, may have this experience accredited
when confirmed as having been gained under the supervision
of a suitably registered person.
Coursework
- Complete an electricians theory course and exam.
- Complete an electricians regulations course and exam.
- Complete and pass stages 1, 2 and 3 of the electricians
practical assessment (as per schedule 1 of the Electricity
Regulations 1997).
- Complete courses in safe working practices and testing
(relevant to the work of an Electrician), plus basic first
aid and CPR
(These are normally included in the stage 3
electricians practical assessment course).
Persons are exempt from stage 1 of item 3
above if EST
A and B (or equivalent) practical assessments were completed.
Applying for Registration
Please send:
- A completed application form;
- Written details confirming that a minimum of 8000 hours
of work relevant to the work of an electrician to satisfy
the above requirements has been obtained, confirmed by the
employer(s);
- The original of the EST
Registration certificate and the current practising
licence;
- Results sheets confirming completion and passes in the
coursework/examinations above; and
- A practical assessment processing application (or the
pass result issued as a result thereof); and
- A practical assessment processing application fee, a
registration application fee plus a practising licence
fee, if appropriate. See notes below.
Notes
- The practical assessment processing application fee is
$25.00.
- The registration application fee is $103.00 (GST
Incl.).
- For practising licence fee see the schedule on the
application form.
- Practising licence fee not required if
a current EST
