Registration - Mutual Recognition Arrangement New
Zealand/Australia

Contents
A special arrangement between New Zealand and Australia
allows for electrical workers with specific Australian
electrical licences/certificates or registration, to be issued
with an equivalent New Zealand electrical registration.
Electrician Registration
No further training or experience is required where one the
following Australian electrical
licences/certificates/registrations are held:
New South Wales
- Contractor Licence Electrical (Q) together with
- Evidence of apprenticeship completion; or
- A Tradesman's Rights Certificate.
- Qualified Supervisor Certificate (Q) together with
- Evidence of apprenticeship completion; or
- A Tradesman's Rights Certificate.
Northern Territory
- "A" Grade Electrical Mechanics Licence
endorsed "AT" or "LE".
Queensland
- Certificate of Competency as an Electrical Mechanic
endorsed "AT" or "LE"; or
- Certificate of Competency as an Electrical Fitter and
Electrical Mechanic endorsed "AT" or
"LE".
South Australia
- Electrical Workers Registration; or
- Electrical Worker/Electrical Contractor Licence.
Tasmania
- "A" Grade Electrical Mechanics Licence
endorsed "AT" or "LE".
Victoria
- "A" Grade Electrical Mechanics Licence
endorsed "AT" or "LE", or
"Unrestricted Electrical Mechanic".
Western Australia
- "A" Grade Electrical Workers Licence endorsed
"Electrical Mechanic";
- "A" Grade Electrical Workers Licence endorsed
"Electrical Fitter" and "Electrical
Mechanic".

Line Mechanic Registration
Qualifications obtained in some states of Australia,
together with specific experience and coursework, are accepted
towards New Zealand registration as a Line Mechanic.
The specific experience and coursework required is:
- Three months New Zealand experience in the carrying out
of prescribed electrical work; and
- Completion of refresher courses in safe working
practices, testing and cardio-pulmonary resuscitation
(CPR).
The qualifications accepted are:
New South Wales
- A certificate of service issued under the Overhead Line
(Workers) Regulations 1964.
Queensland
- A Certificate of Competency as an Electrical Linesman.
Victoria
Electrical Service Technician
A Restricted Licence "S" (all categories) from
the state of Victoria, is accepted without the need for
further qualifications or experience, for the issue of a New
Zealand registration.

Please send:
- A completed application form (EWLG
593);
- A copy of the Australian licence/certificate;
- The relevant fee.
Practising Licences
In addition to registration New Zealand requires an annual practising
license to be held where prescribed electrical work
is to be undertaken for payment or reward. The requirements
for obtaining a practising licence are:
- Confirmation that a safety tuition refresher course in
safe working practices, testing, basic first aid and CPR
has been undertaken. For Electricians and Electrical
Service Technicians the tuition must have been undertaken
within the past 24 months; for Line Mechanics safe working
practices, testing and basic first aid must have been
undertaken in the past 14 months, CPR within the last 7
months.
- Completion of the relevant application form.
- Inclusion of the relevant fee. (see Note 2).
Notes
- The registration application fee is $103.00 (GST Incl)
- The fee for the initial
practising licence is on a "pro rata" basis (see
fee schedule on the application form).

- A list of recognised training providers is provided here.
- New Zealand does not require a
registered electrical worker to hold a "Contractors
Licence" in order to operate an electrical
contracting business.
- For New Zealand registered electrical workers travelling
to Australia and seeking registration in that country the
regulatory authority in the state should be contacted. In
general Australia would wish to sight a New Zealand
registration certificate and, in some states a current
practising licence, before considering the issue of a
