Registering with an Australian licence under TTMRA
Recognition of Australia's qualifications and experience. Find out how the electrician registration compares in Australia to New Zealand.
Trans-Tasman Mutual Recognition
If you have an Australian licence, your application is processed in accordance with the Trans-Tasman Mutual Recognition Act 1997 (TTMRA). Check that your licence is recognised in New Zealand – the table below has Australian licences that we are aware of and their equivalent registration class in New Zealand.
Application process
Download and complete the application form
1.3 Electrical Registration form for New Zealand electrical workers [PDF, 258 KB]
Print, complete, sign and scan your application form. PDF or JPG formats are supported by the Board’s Internet application process.
Pay the application fee
Pay your registration application fee ($350 incl. GST for New Zealand and Australian trained applicants) and practising licence application fee (see fee schedule on application form).
Provide credit card details and authorisation on your application form (preferred). Payment by cheque is only supported for paper applications posted to the Board’s PO box. Make cheques payable to “Electrical Workers Registration Board”.
Prepare supporting documents
Organise and scan the following documents. PDF and JPG formats supported:
- certified copy of the personal identity page of your passport
- certified copy of both sides of your Australian licence(s)
Note – certification of your copied documents must be done by either a Justice of the Peace, a Public Notary, a solicitor or NZ court registrar. Please do not ask the NZ police to certify your copies. - evidence of completion of an NZ Competence Programme*
- an ID photo online or attached one to your application
* Completing a NZ Competence Programme is easier if you have an EW number (this is our file number of an applicant). You may wish to apply for registration first, in order to get an EW number, and have your application placed on hold while you complete the Competence Programme and have this completion confirmation uploaded to your file. Just note the date of your planned Competence Programme on your application form.
Submit your application
It is quick and easy to submit applications to become a registered electrical worker via internet. Applications mailed to the Board’s postal address take longer to receive and process.
