Apply for a Limited Certificate
You can only apply for a Limited certificate if you have been invited to after your overseas registration assessment has been completed and you meet the minimum requirements for registration.
A Limited Certificate application will be set up for you in your EW Portal for you to complete and submit.
Limited Certificates are for experienced electrical workers from overseas who need to complete registration requirements before becoming fully registered:
- You must have received an assessment outcome letter stating that you can apply for a Limited Certificate.
- You will need to be employed or about to be employed and have a nominated supervisor who has appropriate registration and a current practising licence.
How to apply when you have been offered a Limited Certificate after a registration assessment has been completed.
1. Download the supervision declaration form
2. Documents required
A signed and completed supervision declaration form from the registered and licensed electrical worker who will supervise you.
- A photo that meets the criteria for your ID card (if not already on file):
- a face, head and shoulders shot, looking directly at the camera and less than 6 months old
- plain, light coloured background
- sunglasses, glasses with tinted lenses OR headwear that obscures your face are not permitted
- 3:4 – width to height ratio, in full colour
- between 50KB and 5MB in size (or printed image for paper applications).

- Payment details: You can pay for your application by credit or debit card. All payments made outside the New Zealand banking system must be made by credit card.

3. How long does it take?
Processing and issuing of a Limited Certificate may take up to 20 working days.
4. Next steps
Once your application has been completed and approved, you will receive:
- A Limited Certificate approval letter with your requirements to complete registration.
- Your Limited Certificate card. This will take up to 15 working days to arrive depending on your location. However, if it has not arrived within 20 working days then contact us.
If you do not receive your licence card you must contact us within 3 months of receiving the approval email. If you contact us outside of this time frame and have not received your card, you will need to apply and pay for a replacement card.
Completing safety training
You must complete Safety Training within three months of being issued your Limited Certificate, covering safe working practices, testing, CPR and basic first aid.
