Trans-Tasman Mutual Recognition

If you have an Australian licence, your application is processed in accordance with the Trans-Tasman Mutual Recognition Act 1997 (TTMRA).

Application process

Print, complete, sign and scan your application form. PDF or JPG formats are supported by the Board’s Internet application process.

Pay the application fee

Pay your registration application fee ($175 incl. GST for New Zealand and Australian trained applicants) and practising licence application fee (see fee schedule on application form).

Provide credit card details and authorisation on your application form (preferred). Payment by cheque is only supported for paper applications posted to the Board’s PO box. Make cheques payable to “Electrical Workers registration Board”.

Prepare supporting documents

Organise and scan the following documents. PDF and JPG formats supported:

  • certified copy of the personal identity page of your passport
  • certified copy of both sides of your Australian licence(s)
  • evidence of completion of an NZ Competence Programme
  • an ID photo online or attached one to your application.

Submit your application

It is quick and easy to submit applications to become a registered electrical worker via internet. Applications mailed to the Board’s postal address take longer to receive and process.

Please do not courier applications as this may delay processing. Applications via fax or email are not accepted.

If you require an invoice, this can be sent once processing of the fees is complete. Please state if one is required and the email address for remitting as invoices are not sent automatically.

What next?

If your application is complete (the form is correctly filled in, all required documents have been submitted and payment is accepted) the assessment process will begin. Overseas applications will take 6 – 8 weeks to complete.

Northern Territory

1. Licence

"A" Grade Electrical Mechanics Licence endorsed LE or AT.

2. Equivalence to New Zealand Requirements

This certificate:

    1. Exempts the holder from the 3rd stage theory examination requirements.
    2. Exempts the holder from the 3rd stage practical assessment or examination requirements.
    3. Exempts the holder from the regulations examination requirements.
    4. Is evidence of the completion of 4 years work experience that has incorporated the skills in paragraph 1(2) of Clause 1 of Schedule 1 of the Electricity Regulations 1997
    5. Exempts the holder from the safety instruction requirements of Clause 3 of Schedule 1 of the Electricity Regulations 1997.

3. Registration requirements

Nil

Note: Where the holder requires a practising licence, they must complete the requirements detailed in section 4.9, Part I.

Queensland

1. Licences

    1. Certificate of Competency as an Electrical Mechanic endorsed AT or LE.
    2. Certificate of Competency as an Electrical Fitter and Electrical Mechanic endorsed AT or LE.

2. Equivalence to New Zealand Requirements

Either certificate:

    1. Exempts the holder from the 3rd stage theory examination requirements.
    2. Exempts the holder from the 3rd stage practical assessment or examination requirements.
    3. Exempts the holder from the regulations examination requirements.

This is a certificate of service issued under the Overhead Line (Workers) Regulations 1964.

2. Equivalence to New Zealand requirements

This certificate:

    1. Exempts the holder from the theory and regulation examination requirements and the practical examination or assessment requirements.
    2. Is evidence of the completion of 2 years work experience that has incorporated the skills in paragraph 1(2) of Clause 1 of Schedule 3 of the Electricity Regulations 1997.

3. Registration requirements

The holder of this certificate must:

    1. Complete three months prescribed electrical work.
    2. Complete the safety instruction requirements of Clause 3 of Schedule 1 of the Electricity Regulations 1997.

Queensland

1. Licence

Certificate of Competency as an Electrical Linesman.

2. Equivalence to New Zealand Requirements

This certificate:

    1. Exempts the holder from the theory and regulation examination requirements and the practical examination or assessment requirements.
    2. Is evidence of the completion of 2 years work experience that has incorporated the skills in paragraph 1(2) of Clause 1 of Schedule 3 of the Electricity Regulations 1997.

3. Registration requirements

The holder of this certificate must:

    1. Complete three months prescribed electrical work.
    2. Complete the safety instruction requirements of Clause 3 of Schedule 1 of the Electricity Regulations 1997.

Victoria

1. Licence

SECV Certificate.

2. Equivalence to New Zealand requirements

This certificate:

    1. Exempts the holder from the theory and regulation examination requirements and the practical examination or assessment requirements.
    2. Is evidence of the completion of 2 years work experience that has incorporated the skills in paragraph 1(2) of Clause 1 of Schedule 3 of the Electricity Regulations 1997.

3. Registration requirements

The holder of this certificate must:

    1. Complete three months prescribed electrical work.
