Here’s a summary of the key changes:
- New endorsed registration classes have started earlier than planned and are now available.
- Work limits have changed so you can test and certify any work you are authorised to carry out in accordance with your obligations under the Electrical (Safety) Regulations 2010, regardless of who carried out the work.
- If you hold an Electrician, Electrical Appliance Serviceperson, Electrical Service Technician or Electrical Installer registration class, you continue to work under the 2019 Registration Notice, until after 1 September 2026. Unless you carry out prescribed electrical work in a Mining Operation, you don’t need to hold an endorsed registration class to work in the high-risk areas yet.
What you need to do
If you’ve renewed your licence on or after 1 September 2024 (and you are an Electrical Inspector, Electrical Engineer, Distribution Line Mechanic, Transmission Line Mechanic, Traction Line Mechanic, Cable Jointer or Substation Maintainer) make sure:
- You hold the endorsed (supervision) registration class on your licence if you supervise more than 2 people to carry out prescribed electrical work (PEW) – unless you are an Electrical Inspector.
- You hold the correct endorsed registration class if you work in one of the following areas:
- hazardous areas
- mining operations
- mains parallel generation systems
- medical cardiac protected areas.
- If you are working in these areas and have already applied for an endorsed registration class, you can continue to do so while we process your application.
- If you are working under supervision in one of these areas, check your supervisor holds the right registration class on their licence (if their licence expires on or after 1 September 2024).
- If you are working in these areas, when you next renew your licence, you’ll need to apply for an endorsed registration class. Apply using the usual registration process.
This is important to ensure you're working legally and safely under the updated requirements.
This change is all about making things clearer and smoother for you. If you have questions or need help understanding what this means for you, visit the Electrical Workers Registration Board website.
