Teaching and supervision guidelines

The Board publishes teaching guidelines to ensure that anyone training to be an electrical worker receives instruction that is consistent and credible. The guidelines are structured around essential capabilities and provide a benchmark for the development and delivery of courses for trainees.

Supervision procedures

The primary responsibility of a supervisor when supervising a trainee is to take all practicable steps to ensure that:

  1. the work is carried out competently;
  2. while the work is being undertaken, appropriate safety measures are adopted;
  3. the completed work complies with the Electricity (Safety) Regulations 2010.

Ensuring the safety of the trainee requires that the supervisor:

  1. determines the electrical isolation, testing, earthing and other associated safety measures required to make any work site safe;
  2. identifies the boundaries of the safe working area at any work site;
  3. ensures that equipment required to safely carry out any work is available and maintained so that the equipment is safe to use;
  4. ensures the trainee understands the procedures relating to the use of locks for personal protection against electric shock and safety tags;
  5. ensures the trainee is aware of their limits of work; and
  6. does not leave a trainee who has inadequate skills on their own.

The Board approves Supervision Procedures to assist employers of trainees, people who supervise trainees, and trainees with interpretation of the supervision requirements in the Electricity Act 1992 and the Electricity (Safety) Regulations 2010.

Any trainee who is assisting a supervisor with carrying out prescribed electrical work should be supervised in accordance with these Supervision Procedures.
