How to determine if you need a new endorsed registration class

There is a new registration framework for registered and licensed Electrical Workers. The new framework is currently being phased in. As part of the changes, there are new endorsed classes of registration.

Use the flow chart below to help you work out if you need to hold an endorsed registration class and when you need it by.

The endorsed classes of registration are:

  • Supervision (of more than 2 persons). Note: Electrical Inspectors can supervise any number of people with no endorsed class
  • Mains Parallel Generation Systems
  • Hazardous Areas  
  • Medical Cardiac Protected Areas  
  • Mining Operations 

Step 1: Do you need to hold an endorsed registration class?

Are you working, or intending to work, in an endorsed work area?

  • yes
    • you need to hold a new endorsed registration class. Go to step 2 to see when you need to hold it. 
  • no
    • you do not need a new endorsed registration class.

Step 2: When do you need to hold the endorsed registration class? 

What is your main registration class?

  • Group A (Electrical Inspector, Electrical Engineer, Distribution Line Mechanic, Transmission Line Mechanic, Traction Line Mechanic, Cable Jointer, Substation Maintainer)
    • you must hold the endorsed registration class/es at your first licence renewal on or after 1 September 2024 
  • Group B (Electrician, Electrical Appliance Serviceperson, Electrical Service Technician, Electrical Installer)
    • you must hold the endorsed registration class/es at your first licence renewal on or after 1 September 2026

Practising licence renewal basics

  • you must renew your licence every 2 years
  • you’ll get a renewal email from us
  • you have 3 months from that email to complete your renewal
  • if you don’t renew within that time, your licence will expire.

What to do next

  • If you currently work in any of the endorsed areas, apply for the relevant endorsed classes to ensure you are working lawfully.
  • If you do not work in any of the endorsed areas, you do not need to take any action.
