Meet the Board (Tom Wiseman)

Based in Taranaki, Tom balances a busy family life with running a medium-sized business that provides services across commercial installations, industrial projects, hazardous areas, and emerging new energy technologies.

A self-confessed “energy nerd”, Tom has spent much of his career working in the upstream energy sector across both gas and electricity industries. He began his career as a domestic electrician, completing his apprenticeship while gaining experience in a wide range of commercial installations. Early in his career, he moved into the oil and gas sector, where he further developed his expertise by studying Instrumentation and Control to Level 5 and gaining registration as an Electrical Inspector.

Tom later expanded his skills into business studies before purchasing a share in the company he now operates. His first exposure to the EWRB came through the Future Board Members Programme, where he had the opportunity to shadow Board members and learn more about the Board’s governance and disciplinary responsibilities.

Having served on the EWRB for nearly 3 years, Tom says it has taken time and patience to fully understand the role and the limits of the Board’s functions. However, he enjoys the work and values the positive environment created by the current Board. Following the significant Board refresh in 2023, he believes the team has now found its footing and is well placed to make meaningful contributions to the industry where possible.

In addition to his EWRB responsibilities, Tom serves on the Electrotechnology, IT and Creative Industry Skills Board and sits on his company’s Board.

Looking ahead, Tom has an ambitious year planned. He is working to establish an electricity retail company, develop new hydrogen production products, and expand his business into new markets.

Through his role on the EWRB, Tom is passionate about strengthening the relationship between electrical workers and the licensing regime. He is particularly interested in helping the industry navigate the rapidly changing technological landscape, balancing both the opportunities and risks presented by the transition to a new energy system.
