Updated supervision companion guide and Rules of the Board

The Electrical Workers Registration Board (EWRB) have released an updated supervision companion guide. The Rules of the Board relating to supervision and Limited Certificates have also been updated.

Updated supervision companion guide

Supervision is an important process and needs to be understood by both the Supervisor (the person doing the supervision) and the Supervisee (the person being supervised). It supports the training and development of electrical workers seeking registration and helps others working under supervision understand the work they can carry out.

The EWRB supervision companion guide provides practical guidance to help electrical workers apply effective supervision practices. The guide is for electrical workers supervising others to do prescribed electrical work (PEW), and for anyone working under supervision.

An electrical worker should be familiar with the supervision companion guide because it provides practical guidance on how to meet the legal and professional requirements for supervising PEW in New Zealand. Reading the guide will help you understand your responsibilities and apply supervision in line with best practice.

Updated Rules of the Board

The Rules of the Board carry the same authority as regulations and must be adhered to. The following Rules of the Board have recently been updated:

Issuing Limited Certificates and Provisional Licences [PDF, 432 KB]

Supervision of persons who are not Limited Certificate Holders [PDF, 413 KB]

Supervision of Trainees Holding a Limited Certificate [PDF, 548 KB]

Clarification about Limited Certificates

Registered electrical workers are not required to hold a Limited Certificate while gaining practical experience in an endorsed area of registration, although they may choose to apply for one.

A Limited Certificate authorises the holder to carry out PEW under supervision, within the scope of work that their supervisor is authorised to perform.

Electrical workers who do not hold a Limited Certificate may also carry out PEW under supervision; however, they are not allowed to connect or disconnect a supply of electricity or certify PEW.
