Registration class changes

A new registration framework for Electrical Workers is changing the registration requirements and work limits for each registration class. Find out more about this and how your registration class may be impacted.

On 4 August 2025, the framework registration requirements and work limits were updated by the 2025 Registration Notice.

Electricity (Prescribed Classes of Registration for Electrical Workers) Notice 2025

Endorsed registration classes

The new framework introduces new endorsed registration classes to carry out work in the following areas:

  • Medical Cardiac Protected Areas
  • Hazardous Areas
  • Mains Parallel Generation Systems
  • Mining Operations
  • Supervision (of more than 2 persons).

If you are granted a new licence or renew your licence after 4 August 2025, under the 2025 Registration Notice, you need to ensure you hold the correct endorsed registration class to work in these areas.

Electrician, Electrical Service Technician, Electrical Appliance Serviceperson and Electrical Installer registration class holders are not required to hold endorsed registration classes to work in these areas until after 1 September 2026.

Electrical Inspector

Electrical Inspector registration class holders continue to work under the 2019 Registration Notice until they renew their practising licence on or after 1 September 2024.

If you have an Electrical Inspector licence issued after 1 September 2024 you must hold an endorsed class of registration to carry out PEW in one of the high-risk endorsed areas.

Under the 2025 Registration Notice, Electrical Inspectors may test or certify any PEW that they are authorised to carry out in accordance with the obligations of the Electricity (Safety) Regulations 2010 and ECP51, regardless of who carried out the work.

Electrical Engineer

Electrical Engineer registration class holders continue to work under the 2019 Registration Notice until they renew their practising licence on or after 1 September 2024.

If you have an Electrical Engineer licence issued after 1 September 2024 you must hold an endorsed class of registration to carry out PEW in one of the high risk endorsed areas.

Electrician

A new option will be introduced to the experience pathway for this class from 1 September 2026. It will allow registration after being registered as an Electrical Installer for 1 year, and completing 1 year of practical experience as an Electrical Installer with the examination requirements.

Electrical Service Technician

Electrical Service Technician registration class holders continue to work under the 2019 Registration Notice until September 2026. If you are granted or renew your licence on or after 1 September 2026, then you will need to comply with the 2025 Registration Notice registration requirements and work limits.

The limits of work for this class will expand to include the disconnection and reconnection of fittings that fixed wired appliances are connected to on 1 September 2026.

Associated Tradesperson

Associated Tradesperson LBPs are limited to the disconnection or reconnection of fittings to or from a power supply provided that the electrical rating of the fitting is not greater than 250 volts and 16 amperes. This change reduces the risk of accidental harm while providing for common trade activities such as disconnecting or connecting light fittings and socket outlets.

Revoked registration classes

The following registration classes were revoked on 4 August 2025:

  • Distribution Line Mechanic (Endorsed)
  • Electrical Appliance Serviceperson (Endorsed to Disconnect and Connect)
  • Electrical Inspector (Endorsed Mining)
  • Electrician (Endorsed Mining).

This means that you can no longer apply for these registration classes. If you were granted one of these registration classes before 4 August 2025, you will be granted registration with the appropriate class below:

  • Distribution Line Mechanic
  • Electrical Inspector (Endorsed Mining Operations)
  • Electrician (Endorsed Mining Operations)

The limits of work for the Distribution Line Mechanic class expanded on 1 September 2024 under the 2023 Notice to include the restoration of supply that a Distribution Line Mechanic (Endorsed) were able to previously do in their limits of work.

The registration class names for the Electrical Inspector (Endorsed Mining) and Electrician (Endorsed Mining) classes have changed, but the limits of work are still relevant to Mining Operations.

Electrical Appliance Serviceperson (Endorsed to Disconnect and Connect) (EASQ)

The EAS and EASQ are merging into a single class. The limits of work for the EAS registration class will be extended to include disconnection and reconnection from 1 September 2026.

The EASQ registration class was revoked on 4 August 2025. If you currently hold the EASQ registration class, you can continue to work as usual. Once the new EAS work limits commence, we will help you to transfer to the EAS registration class.

You can no longer apply for the EASQ registration class. The examination offered by Aspeq Limited for the EASQ is no longer available to book. If you have recently passed this examination, you may use your examination result to apply for registration as an EAS.
