Stepped pathway for Electrical Installer to Electrician

To apply for registration as an Electrician using the stepped pathway, you must:

  • pass the Electricians Theory coursework and written exam
  • pass the Electricians Regulations coursework and written exam
  • complete the Electricians stages 1, 2 and 3 practical assessments
  • have been registered as an Electrical Installer with the Board for at least 1 year
  • have completed at least 1 year of practical experience in the prescribed electrical work of an Electrical Installer while registered as an Electrical Installer with the Board.

To apply for registration as an Electrician using the stepped pathway, you need 1 or more of the following:

  • detailed references of your work experience as a registered Electrical Installer; or
  • if you are self-employed:
    • a statutory declaration outlining your work experience as a registered Electrical Installer, and
    • evidence of being self-employed.

Work experience references or statutory declarations

Your work experience references or statutory declaration must:

  • detail the prescribed electrical work of an Electrical Installer that you have completed while registered as an Electrical Installer, covering 1 year (2000 hours)
  • include the start and end dates of your employment for each company, or self-employment
  • include the number of hours, days, weeks, or months of work experience you have completed.

Work experience references must be on company letterhead.

If you are making a statutory declaration, it must be made in front of a person authorised to witness a statutory declaration. In New Zealand, this can be:

  • an enrolled barrister and solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand
  • a Justice of the Peace
  • a notary public
  • a Registrar or Deputy Registrar of the District Court, High Court, Court of Appeal, or Supreme Court.
