Switchboard Labelling

Clause 2.9.5.1 of AS/NZS 3000:2007 contains a requirement that “all electrical equipment shall be legibly and indelibly identified in the English language in accordance with the requirements of Clauses 2.9.5.2 to 2.9.5.6”. Clauses 2.3.3 and 2.3.4 also contain requirements for main switches and additional isolating switches.

The Board often deals with complaints which involve switchboards. It has observed that there is often an over reliance on the manufacturer’s labels or switches that are provided with the board. Sometimes these are adequate, often they are not. Electrical workers should take care to ensure that labels accurately identify the associated electrical equipment. Thought should be given to what sort of labelling is needed to ensure that those who use the installation can identify what the function is of the associated electrical equipment. Labelling is for their benefit; it is not just a compliance requirement.
