Changes to Electrical Worker registration

A new registration framework for Electrical Workers commenced in September 2024. Find out about the new framework and how this affects you.

A new registration framework for registered and licensed Electrical Workers took effect on 1 September 2024. All registered and licensed Electrical Workers need to be aware of these changes and what they mean for them.

The framework outlines registration requirements for Electrical Workers, and the prescribed electrical work (PEW) that each registration class is authorised to do.

These changes include:

  • changes to the registration requirements and PEW for registration classes
  • changes to the limits of work that can be carried out by each registration class to align more closely with the Electricity (Safety) Regulations 2010
  • new endorsed registration classes to recognise the unique risks of carrying out PEW in high-risk areas (mining operations, medical cardiac protected areas, hazardous areas and mains parallel generation systems) and supervising more than 2 people at the same time.
  • improved career pathways making it easier for Electrical Service Technicians and Electrical Installers to progress through registration classes.

In August 2025, the Electrical Workers Registration Board issued a new 2025 Registration Notice that made minor changes to registration requirements and work limits following industry feedback. It also brought forward the start of endorsed registration classes so they can be granted sooner.
